Sioux Brew: Beer review – Boulevard Saison
Although it bills itself as a “brisk, unruly” saison, I found Boulevard Saison to subtle, well balanced and teeming with all the things that make the best beers of this style so good.
Released as part of the Kansas City brewery’s new-ish Smokestack Series, this beer is really good.
Saison pours a cloudy golden yellow with a massive off-white head and aromas of clove and lemon zest. There are minor notes of coriander.
The initial flavor is predominately of wheat, with pronounced clove and spice. There are hints of lemon zest and some very subtle vanilla notes. At the back of the throat there is some hop astringency balanced with a sweet-ish Belgian yeast flavor.
The mouthfeel of this beer is very smooth.
Boulevard Saison is a subtle, well-proportioned beer that I found to be full-flavored and medium in body. Its flavors work very well together to produce a nice and exceedingly drinkable ale.
This beer is 6.2% alcohol by volume and was purchased at Beertopia in Omaha.
