LIQUID DIET: the blog: Oh yeah, the beer.
Someone I deeply respect–0kay, it was me–noticed that I have now posted two photographs and a smattering of commentary about the Bella Vista event on Sunday– not to mention another photo just added in comments–and nary a word about the beers.
This is highly unseemly behavior for what purports to be a beer blog.
Not unusual perhaps, but certainly not appropriate.
And so…
My top two beers are pretty much in tune with what I have seen elsewhere on the internets, something which does not make me at all comfortable, but it is what it is.
The most memorable brew of the day, my first chance to sample it, was Ballast Point Sculpin IPA, a wonderful example of the contemporary style with a marvelous nose, crisp and citrusy flavor and lingering, just bitter enough finish. This is one great beer.
The other real standout of my day was the Satellite Coffee Porter from Dock Street, a perfectly balanced, rich dark brew that really deserves a lot more attention locally than it’s gotten.
I drank a whole lot of Yards ESA, enjoyed both the Oktoberfest and Pils from Stoudts as well as a Victory Prima Pils, all of them perfect sessionable beers for a sunny early fall afternoon in the city.
There was a great deal of fuss among some of the attendees (read “Big Dan”) about the Voodoo beers which were in the house but I never did get to them, admittedly in part because they seemed just too big and over the top for the situation.
The food, by the way, was excellent, ranging from traditional South Philly fare like meatballs and sausage with peppers to more 21st century stuff such as a veggie hoagie, plus great cheese and cookie trays. A lot of folks from the neighborhood caught on that there was free beer and food available, which made the whole afternoon even cooler, although there was one bent over, white haired old Italian lady in the sandwich line who looked so much like my long dead grandmother that it was disconcerting.
